The California Poppy Stained Glass Panel

California poppies are my aunt’s favorite flower. When she asked me to make something for the transom window at her house in Houston, she knew she wanted these delicate flowers to be the inspiration.

Their house has a Scandinavian, homey feel, so I kept most of the panel quiet: muted colors and simple, abstract lines. The poppies were the one place I let the color go. I wanted them to pop.

The panel is 31 inches wide and 11.5 inches tall, sized to fit that window, with shining silver solder lines. In the light the poppies glow while everything around them stays soft, and the panel looks a little different from morning to evening.

I made it as a commission, and it went to Houston in 2022.

If you have a window like this in your own home, I take a small number of commissions each year. You can see more of my work on the stained glass panels page, and new panels go to my email list first. If you’d like to see the next one before anyone else, join the list.
